Meet the Team: Sophie Gerard, PA-C, APP

Q: What brought you to the field of survivorship?

A: In my practice as a Medical Oncology Physician Assistant, I noticed a significant gap in care once patients finished active treatment. Once the chemotherapy and radiation concluded, follow-up visits became infrequent, even though the physical and mental challenges often persisted (or were just beginning). I realized the importance of having professionals trained in the specifics of survivorship and was thrilled to find that group at OncoveryCare. The cancer journey doesn't end after treatment finishes, and the ability to help patients navigate long-term changes is something I consider a calling and a privilege.

Q: What excites you most about the future of survivorship?

A: I'm so excited to support patients during a chapter in their cancer journey that historically hasn't received enough attention. Survivorship is about more than follow-up appointments—it's about helping people regain confidence and live well after cancer. I'm inspired by the increasing focus on helping people thrive after treatment by addressing their physical, emotional, and long-term health needs. It's exciting to be part of a field that continues to evolve and provide more personalized, comprehensive care for survivors.

Q: What’s the best part of being part of the Oncovery team?

A: Everyone on the team is so knowledgeable and working at the very top of their license, so it's incredibly motivating to be surrounded by such talented people. At the same time, every team member is so kind and truly wants to help our patients (and each other) thrive, which makes this such a wonderful and supportive place to work.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A: I wanted to be either a doctor or the editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine! Fun fact: My first career out of college was as a fashion and beauty writer, and I got to cover New York Fashion Week! While I had so much fun, I always had medicine in the back of my mind and ultimately decided to pivot and pursue a career as a PA, and I've never looked back!

Q: What’s your favorite way to spend a Sunday morning?

A: My ideal Sunday involves a long walk around Lake Austin with my husband and daughter, followed by breakfast tacos, coffee and a crossword puzzle!
