Meet the Team: Alicia Tan

What brought you to the field of survivorship?

Before I met the OncoveryCare team, I had always thought that undergoing cancer treatment was the hardest part of the journey, and that when you were cleared for remission, life could resume as usual. In getting to know Hil better – OncoveryCare fearless co-founder and CEO – and learning more about her experiences navigating life as a cancer survivor, I was struck by the many unique challenges faced by survivors. Survivorship often entails physical and emotional strain, the need for specialized care, and difficulty finding support and a community that understands what you’re going through.

I’ve spent my career in healthcare dedicated to delivering better care to underserved populations. It was clear there was a massive gap in survivorship care, one that would continue to expand as the number of survivors grow over the next few years. I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to work with OncoveryCare in building the care experience that survivors deserve.

What excites you most about the future of survivorship?

It’s been exciting to see the momentum around addressing survivorship care, with both public and private stakeholders investing more time and energy in the space. New legislation like the Comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Act, if passed, would greatly enhance the coverage of survivorship care planning and navigation services and improve the level of support provided to survivors today. I’m excited about OncoveryCare's opportunity to build upon this increased awareness to create meaningful impact for survivors and even establish a new standard of care.

What’s the best part of being part of the OncoveryCare team?

I’ve loved getting a chance to work with such a passionate and mission-driven group of people. Their dedication to the survivorship community is apparent in every conversation and in the thoughtfulness behind the solutions we build and how we approach delivering care. We have such a fun and uplifting culture that makes me excited to spend time with the team everyday. It’s been such a pleasure to work alongside and learn from some of the best people I know!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up, I spent most of my afternoons at the pond in my backyard, looking at (and probably attempting to play with) all the animals, amphibians, and bugs, which developed into a passion for wildlife biology. In third grade, I think I must have checked out the same encyclopedia of animal species book at least 50 times.

It was either that, or a Princess.

What’s your favorite way to spend a Sunday morning?

On Sundays, you’ll find me at my local farmers market, devouring fresh pastries and stocking up on produce for the week. I also love to spend Sundays as true rest days, and will often take the time to cook a slow, hearty meal, stroll along the beach, or curl up with my cat, Miso, and a good book!
